HIGHER volume and SHOE rotation – Ultra Training EP4

Episode 4 of my 10 weeks ultra training.

In this episode i take you along a new long run. This time it was a 4 hours long run but i added a small twist to it.
A friend, who recently started running again, wanted to run a 5K race in his backyard.
To support him, i wanted to run that 5K together with him.

But what i didn’t told him up front was that i would be running from my place to his before the race…
From my place to his is a bit more than 32K, but with a couple of wrong turns i ended up doing 33,1Km.
You should have seen the look on his face when i said he couldn’t chicken out of this 5K race since i’ve already done 33Km just to get there.

Running that 33K went pretty good, better than my long run the week before. Ok, i need to admit that there was a lot less elevation difference, but still…

The 5K race was a trail race in the mud due to the rain the days before.

We didn’t mind and ran it at Mathias his pace that he felt comfortable with.

We ended up running the 5,2K in just under 41 minutes.

I know that this isn’t a fast result, but that wasn’t our goal!

For a beginner, that has astma and is working on his endurance, this was already not bad.
He will improve his 5K time soon, i’m sure about that!
And the day he decides to run a 10K race, i’ll be there to support him!

During my long run you could see that i was wearing a new hydration vest.
This is the Salomon Sense Pro 10 vest including a custom quiver to transport my trekking poles.
I’m not using the trekking poles yet, the first runs will be just to get used to having them with me!

I also thought it might be important to share a bit about the shoe rotation that i’m doing for the moment.
As you know, i cover a lot of distance, on different kind of terrains.
Because of that i prefer having multiple pairs of shoes in my closet to make sure i can vary it up a bit.
For Treadmill running i’ve got 2 pair that never go outside, only treadmill or indoor bike.
Then i have 6 pair that i rotate (on feeling) to do my easy pace runs (check the video as i listed them up).
I’ve got 2 pairs that i use for speed sessions.
To wrap up, i’ve got 3 pairs that i use for trail running.
As you will see in the video, i do have other pairs of shoes, but i don’t use them all actively.

Some shoes are more suitable if you are training for road races, to go for a PB, etc…
They will be used later on again depending what my goals will be in a couple of months…

That was it for the second week of my Ultra training.
This week flew by and so did the number of kilometers, 103Km in total!
The third week will be a bit lower in volume, but that is only to make sure that my body recovers properly, and gets stronger for what is to come…
