Downhill RUN and GYM session – Ultra Training EP5

Episode 5 of my 10 weeks ultra training.

In this episode i take you along one of my hill repetition sessions.

Hill repetitions are among one of the most important workouts of my Ultra training.
I need to learn my body to handle big elevation changes.
This time I trained in running downhill as this is a weak point for me.

Why? We’ll i’m insecure in running downhill, always afraid to take a wrong step and twist my ankle or just fall on my ass.
Because of this i always slow myself down a lot.
And running down hill should be an advantage to gain some time during a race, not a disadvantage, right?

Total elevation difference from this workout session alone was +200 meters! I did in total 8 repetitions of 1 minute running down.
I gave myself 3 minutes each time to get back up, which was sufficient.
The repetitions were almost all too fast.
I was aiming for a pace of 12-14Km/h but i ran always faster than 14Km/h, the highest was even 17Km/h, whoops…

In the second part of the video i explain a couple of exercises that i’m doing for the moment for strength & conditioning.
I’m still building up slowly, because of this, the exercises evolve frequently.
My weak points for the moment are my knees and shoulders.
I prefer doing full body workouts, but i’m still training at pretty low intensity.

For the moment it is thus possible that i split my trainings in upper body focussed or lower body focussed.
If you train too quickly at a higher intensity, your running wel get affected.
Causing muscle pain and possibly discomforts during your runs.

I was a gym brat before turning to running, so i know a bit my way around (but i’ve gotten a bit rusty!).
